About 35 years ago I was an apprentice, since that time I have seen very few young people entering the mold making trade. It isn’t all their fault though, employers have had a very hard time affording the training and expense.
This is most unfortunate for the metal working trades: tool-and-die-making, precision machining, mould making and CNC machining. If nobody is being trained, who will take the place of all those older workers who are fast approaching retirement?
There are many advantages to the apprenticeship model and it is unfortunate that more young people are not engaged in some type of program. Think about it: you can spend $100,00 for a four year degree and spend the next 10 years paying off that loan.
Oftentimes the recent university graduate had a difficult time finding suitable employment and is forced to take menial work just to keep afloat, much less pay off the student loan. Some loans are basically criminal in the amount of interest paid.
I know a young person who was recently approved for a semester at a local state college for the amount of $13,000. If he took out this loan and made the minimum payments he would actually pay $27,000 in interest! Is that not criminal?
On the other hand, the apprenticeship model pays you while you work, pays for your continuing education, provides benefits and ensures you of continued employment, if you do well. What is not to like about that?
Six reason to become an apprentice
- Earn while you learn
- The best learning model
- Save for retirement
- Schooling is paid for
- Receive benefits such as medical and vacation
- No debt after 4 years
I suppose some might argue that the jobs available for apprentices are less than desirable, after all you might get your hands dirty and have to work overtime. Everybody seems to know of someone who graduated from college and go a 6 figure income right off the bat.
What they don’t tell you is that that individual excelled in his particular field and was therefore chosen above other applicants. Nobody gets a big payday just because they wear Nike sneakers and can use all the latest rap terminology.
In reality you always have to be good at something in order to be rewarded. To whom much is given much is required also means that if you receive a big paycheck you have do so a lot or at least something special to earn it. .
