Carmel RC Technology College : Introduction

Carmel School signWelcome to Carmel RC Technology College, which is a mixed 11 - 18 school in Darlington with a wide catchment area and 1000+ pupils.

The College was successful in bidding for Technology College status in 1995 and in 2001 that was extended for a further four years.

The Technology College support has helped us to develop electronics in the school.

Adrian Hetherington

"I'm Adrian Hetherington and I'm responsible for systems and control at the College. I did a BEd in CDT in 1991 and started here as a newly qualified teacher.

When the national curriculum was first introduced we introduced a circus system for design and technology similar to that in many other schools. There were short focused projects in systems and control, resistant materials, graphics, food and textiles in years 7, 8 and 9.

After a number of years we came to feel that this was giving the pupils a superficial and rushed experience of design and technology. So we have changed the format. The pupils encounter all the material areas in year 7, but then do more extended activities in textiles and resistant materials in year 8, followed by longer projects in food, graphics and systems and control in year 9."
